ODM MP slams President Ruto for following Wetang'ula to Vatican

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has chided President William Ruto over his decision to attend Pope Francis’ funeral in the Vatican despite having delegated National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to represent him.

In an update via his X account on Saturday, April 26, Amisi wondered by the President followed Wetang’ula to the event.

The ODM MP noted that the decision by Ruto made it look like he had travelled to the Vatican to observe how he was being represented by the National Assembly Speaker.

“The president designated the Speaker of the National Assembly to represent him in the Vatican for the Pope’s funeral, which is perfectly in order, and then the president himself follows him to the Vatican to, among other things, say hi to Wetang’ula and watch how he is being represented,” Amisi stated.

Wetang’ula had announced on Thursday, April 24, that he would represent Ruto at the funeral, as the president was still in China for his state tour.

“President William Ruto is out in China; he has nominated and instructed me to represent him at the burial of the Pope on Saturday. I’ll be leaving tonight for Rome to go and join other world leaders in sending off our Pope,” said Wetang’ula.

However, the Head of State on Saturday announced he had flown to Rome to join other world leaders in sending off the late Pope Francis.

“Arrived in Rome, Italy, to join other world leaders and Catholic faithful in the funeral of Pope Francis,” Ruto said on X.

Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, aged 88, in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.

His death came after a long battle with a cerebral stroke, which had led to a coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse.

Pope Francis’ funeral was attended by world leaders, royals, and at least 400,000 mourners.

He was then buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
