Tensions are rising among young members of the Orange Democratic Movement, with a section of the party’s youth demanding accountability over what they describe as open defiance of party leadership.

The group, by the name Broad-based Youth which is led by ODM Youth League chair Kasmuel McOure, has issued a warning to senior party officials, accusing them of trying to weaken Oburu Oginga’s authority.

The group singled out Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, outspoken MP Babu Owino, and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, accusing them of plotting a takeover of party leadership through what it described as unconstitutional methods.

Speaking at a charged press briefing, youth leader Kasmuel McOure didn’t mince words about the unfolding drama within Kenya’s opposition giant.

“This is a stern warning. Anybody who wants to scuttle the broad-based arrangements should ship out of the party,” Kasmuel declared.

He particularly accused Osotsi of feigning ignorance about key party meetings while at the same time advocating for a National Dialogue Conference (NDC).

The Broad-based Youth faction supports the controversial cooperation between ODM and President William Ruto’s government, breaking with traditional opposition politics.

Their support extends beyond party politics, with the group openly backing Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid in a stunning political realignment.

“We know Dr Oginga will be the party leader, and he will lead us to and beyond 2027,” McOure emphasised.

The faction accuses Sifuna, Babu, and Osotsi of missing delegate conventions yet demanding extraordinary meetings to challenge current leadership.

This internal warfare erupted months after Raila Odinga’s death left Kenya’s biggest opposition party grappling with internal wrangles of succession politics.

Oburu Oginga’s faction, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed, favours the government cooperation strategy that many consider controversial.

The opposing camp, led by Winnie Odinga and backed by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, champions a return to grassroots opposition politics.

Their recent Kamukunji rally drew massive crowds, signalling deep divisions within ODM over both leadership and political direction toward 2027.

With both sides digging in, Kenya’s political landscape faces unprecedented uncertainty as the country’s opposition heavyweight tears itself apart from within.
