Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya laments over his arrest by the police claiming he was treated like a terrorist.

Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya on Thursday, July 13 detailed how police officers arrested him along the Bungoma-Kisumu Highway, a day after leading anti-government demonstrations in Busia.

Speaking at the Kakamega Police Station, Oparanya claimed that police officers dressed in civilian clothing had stopped his car in Khayega and taken control of it after kicking out his driver.

Later, he was escorted to the police station to be questioned for using a government car while participating in the protests.

The ODM deputy party leader lamented over his arrest claiming that he was treated like a terrorist.

“At the station, the DCI boss demanded that I write a statement and I declined. So my lawyer wrote a statement on the same” Oparanya stated.

Oparanya’s lawyer, Ken Echesa, asserted that the governor’s life was in danger since the car almost crashed on the way to the station.

He added that Oparanya had been released unconditionally and that there had been some mischief in the governor’s arrest. His car was however detained by the police.

“They are accusing the governor of leading demonstrations in Busia. They have released him unconditionally but detained the car,” the lawyer stated.

“We are giving them 24 hours to return the car because it is his entitlement.”

The release of Oparanya came hours after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga demanded the release of his ally alongside other Kenyans who were apprehended in connection with the demonstrations held on Wednesday, July 12.

“Among those in police custody is Mavoko MP Patrick Makau and as we speak we have just learned of the arrest of Oparanya. We demand the immediate and unconditional dropping of all charges against these two for participating in a constitutionally protected action,” read Azimio’s statement in part.
