Opposition objects disposal of 295 unclaimed bodies, claims they belong to protest victims
Opposition political leaders have objected to the planned disposal of 295 unidentified bodies, claiming they could be victims of police brutality during anti-government protests.
Speaking on Sunday, Jubilee Party Chairman John Kioni accused President William Ruto’s administration of failing to address justice for victims.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i condemned the planned disposal, suggesting they might be youths killed during the demonstrations.
On his part, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed Matiang’i saying the existence of the bodies is proof that killings occurred, particularly in Githurai, and warned the government against talking about compensation after killing people.
The Nairobi City County announced the disposal in early September that it is preparing to dispose of the bodies lying at the Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly City Mortuary.
In a notice by the county government, families were given seven days to identify and collect the bodies, warning that failure to do so would compel the county to seek legal authority for disposal.
Before disposal, the county conducts DNA sampling on all the bodies for potential future identification.

The political leaders further called on citizens to arm themselves with voter cards to transform the nation and weed out ill leadership.
Matiang’i declared that he is ready to carry the mantle of leadership and urged Kenyan youths to register as voters, saying change in the leadership is through voting.
Kalonzo emphasized that change will only come through the ballot, and reassured opposition supporters that Raila Odinga’s collapse does not mark the end of the struggle for reforms.
He also censured the broad-based government, accusing it of being complicit in the alleged Githurai massacre during the June 25, 2024 protests, demanding that the president issue a formal apology to the nation.
Their sentiments were also echoed by Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe, who accused the government of failing to improve the economy.
