Oscar Sudi apologises after lashing out at priest during aunt's burial

Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi was on Saturday afternoon forced to apologise moments after lashing out at a priest during his aunt’s burial ceremony.

The incident ensued after the Catholic priest cautioned leaders against politicking during the burial, emphasising that the occasion was a solemn one, intended to honour the life of the deceased and also show respect to the church.

“I want to urge all of you to show some respect to God because even if you die today, you will be buried by the church,” said the Catholic priest.

However, his efforts to stop the politicians from politicking proved futile as the leaders continued to express their political opinions openly despite the priest’s warning.

Some of the politicians who attended the burial claimed that they needed more time to mourn the deceased and also address the gathering.

It was during the speeches that the Kapseret lawmaker walked to the podium, got hold of the microphone and lashed out at the priest, telling him to walk out of the ceremony if he was irritated by their speeches.

“Today we have gathered here for the burial of my aunt, who is more than 90 years old. I want to tell the church, with respect, that we have not come here to rejoice, and I have really suffered with my deceased aunt,” Sudi commented.

Adding: “I want all of us to show respect to my deceased aunt. So if the priest feels that he has no time to listen to us, then he can as well walk out; there are other priests here who will help us in the burial.”

Minutes after Sudi’s scathing comments, the priest stood and began walking away before the legislator quickly intervened and brought him back to the arena.

In the footage, the lawmaker could be seen holding the priest’s hand as they walked back to the burial ceremony.

“I want to sincerely apologise and say that we have forgiven each other and there are no more squabbles. I want to say that if I have done wrong, please forgive me,” Sudi pleaded.

The priest later proceeded with the ceremony and, in his summon, called on political leaders to respect the church and preach peace.
