Out-of-favour Manchester United defensive duo on their way out of the club

Manchester United defensive duo, Eric Bailly and Ethan Laird on their way out of the club before the transfer closes.

Manchester United defensive duo Eric Bailly and Ethan Laird may soon be on their way out of the old Trafford.

The Athletic claims that Bailly might go on a permanent basis while Laird might sign a new season-long loan agreement.

This comes after Lisandro Martinez’s £56.7 million transfer from Ajax. Tyrell Malacia, a left-back, was also acquired by Erik ten Hag earlier this summer, adding competition at the back.

Bailly is a target for AC Milan. They are not the only Italian team interested in signing him, though.

Jose Mourinho is also keen to reunite with the Ivorian defender at Roma.

Watford have initiated talks with Laird to sign him on a loan deal.

Manchester United is frequently accused of failing to offload players who don’t add anything to the team.

When fully fit, Bailly has shown to be one of Old Trafford’s top defenders. But his history of frequent injuries has proven to be a major roadblock for his career.

Due to his poor fitness and form, he only participated in four Premier League games last season.

The team must reduce its roster in order to make room for the defensive reinforcements under ten Hag.

Bailly is behind Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order.

This makes it very difficult for him to play every week, which he desires.

It appears like United would be better off selling him and using those funds to bolster other positions.

The problem of plenty blocks Laird’s path as well for consistent game time on the pitch.

The 20-year-old faces competition from Diogo Dalot and Aaron-Wan Bissaka for the right-back spot.

The youth academy product is still very young and has plenty of time to gain experience.

A loan move to Watford will help him improve and get regular minutes under his belt.
