Over-age students will not be placed in public secondary schools - CS Machogu

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced that all over-aged students who sat for the 2023 KCPE examinations will not secure placements in secondary schools

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has announced that all over-aged students who sat for the 2023 KCPE examinations will not secure placements in secondary schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said adult candidates did not secure space in any public secondary school in the form one placement exercise.

Speaking on Monday, December 18 while presiding over the release of Form One placement results at Lenana School, Machogu said over-age will continue with their education in Adult and Continuing institutions.

Machogu said only the eligible 2023 KCPE Examination candidates have been placed in public secondary schools.

He said the over-age candidates will continue their education in Adult and Continuing institutions.

He noted that the names of the students have been forwarded to the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education for placements.

“I wish to announce that all the eligible 2023 KCPE Examination candidates have been placed in our public secondary schools. However, all over-age learners have been forwarded to the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education for placement in Adult and Continuing Education institutions,” said Machogu.

Meanwhile, the Education CS said the selection and placement of the other students was strictly guided by the principles of merit, choice, equity, affirmative action, and availability of space.

In the placement, all candidates who scored 400 Marks and above were placed in either National or Extra County schools of their choice.

Similarly, all other candidates were placed in county or sub-county schools, according to the parameters set.

Learners with special needs were placed either in regular or Special Needs schools based on their disability categories, merit, and choice.

Further, he noted that the Ministry has continued to apply affirmative action to cater for the needy and vulnerable children in identified slums and informal settlements in urban areas.

“This is in compliance with the Government’s policy of achieving parity in education,” he said.

Through affirmative action, the ministry placed 130 learners in national and 167 in extra county schools. This comprised 150 girls and 147 boys.

However, Machogu noted that A total of 28,052 candidates did not make choices of schools in various categories, comprising’ National 222, Extra County 4,837, County 8,716 and Sub-county 14,277.

“This situation presented us with a dilemma, as we sought to ensure that every candidate had a placement that would enable them to continue their education seamlessly. A decision was therefore reached to place these candidates in public sub-county secondary schools that were nearest to their former primary schools,” the Education CS stated.

Machogu further announced that all 2024 Form One learners will report on January 15, 2024.
