Parliament through National Assembly Speaker faults the Supreme Court ruling on LGBTQ registration

Parliament through National Assembly Speaker faults the Supreme Court ruling on LGBTQ registration.

The Supreme Court on February 24, ruled that Kenyan authorities were wrong to ban the gay community from registering a rights organization.

However, Parliament through National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula in a terse statement faulted the Judiciary noting that it had a duty to uphold the moral fibre of the country.

“Kenya is deeply religious. Each individual and public institution has a duty to uphold, defend and protect public morals.

“The Supreme Court pronouncement may lead to unintended and unhelpful consequences,” the Speaker stated.

Parliament’s announcement came a day after Attorney General Justin Muturi said he will appeal the Supreme Court’s decision enabling Gay organizations to register as non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Despite disagreeing with the decision, Muturi said Kenyans should be able to express their views on the LGBTQ community because it has a significant impact on daily life.

He added that there should be a discussion on the registration of LGBTQ groups in the church.

The church, on the other hand, has aggressively opposed the decision, contending that it is destroying the moral fabric of the nation.

According to Redeemed Gospel Churches of Kenya’s Archbishop Arthur Kitonga, if the registration process for LGBTQ groups is adhered to, the nation will be cursed.

Calisto Odede, the presiding bishop of CITAM, concurred with him in saying that we risked enabling further immoral laws to be passed in the nation.

“We encourage Kenyans of moral integrity to reject, resist and oppose this supreme court ruling as it will erode our societal norms and morals. We call upon Christians and Kenyans of goodwill to stand out in opposition to this ruling and express their disagreement openly,” read part of a statement by Bishop Odede.

Meanwhile, Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament George Kaluma stated that he will table a bill in parliament criminalizing homosexuality.
