Passport processing to take 24 hours, Kindiki says on Nyayo House clean-up

Kenyans will have their passports processed within a period of 24 hours in the future according to Interior CS Kithure Kindiki

Kenyans will have their passports processed within a period of 24 hours in the future according to Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said on Friday that the government had increased intelligence and was particularly monitoring telephone conversations at the Immigration Department suspected of having criminal intent.

Kindiki reiterated that the process of pacifying Nyayo House and purging it of cartels that have impeded service delivery is far from over.

Speaking when he visited the Immigration office for the second-day running, Prof Kindiki said he would continue ´fighting corruption at Nyayo House until Kenyans are content with service delivery.

“Our dream as a ministry is [to] have a one-day service. [Such that] you apply in the morning and get the passport in the evening,” CS Kindiki explained.

Prof. Kindiki stated that the department will be the most effective in the days to come despite conceding that the public’s perception of immigration, particularly the issuing of passports, has not been very positive in recent days.

“We’ve two problems: technology and production. Then there was corruption that is facilitated by brokers,” CS Kindiki said, adding that the government will procure more equipment and personnel as part of the commitment to ensure quick service delivery.

Meanwhile, Kindiki announced that an emergency desk has been established at the immigration department in Nyayo House to fasten the processing of passports.

“To streamline service delivery, emergency desks have been established to expedite the processing of passports for applicants seeking medical care abroad, students destined to learning institutions abroad and persons who have secured job opportunities in foreign countries and have reporting deadlines,” the CS said.

Kindiki also noted that the emergency desk will serve expectant mothers, parents or guardians accompanying minors, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

He said these groups of Kenyans will be accorded special attention at the immigration desks.

The CS said the ongoing policy and operational reforms at Nyayo House will be extended to all immigration offices countrywide, to facilitate efficient service delivery.

He said all effort and manpower had been deployed to clear the passport processing backlog within 14 days.
