PCEA begins probe after BBC documentary exposes the mistreatment of the elderly at Thogoto care home.

The Thogoto care home manager, Jane Gaturu, has dismissed the allegations maintaining that the accusations of medical negligence were unfounded and emphasizing the care home’s adherence to Christian principles and the rule of law.

In a statement issued on Monday evening, the church said it is working with concerned parties on the ground and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.

The Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) said investigations have already started into the shocking allegations of elder abuse at PCEA Thogoto Care Home for the Aged.

“As a church, we have learned from social media of the circulating information about Thogoto Home for the Aged. As a responsible church, we wish to state the following… We do not condone any unjust or inhumane treatment to any member of the society whether young or old and especially our senior members within the community.

“We have began investigations over the allegations and any misconduct will be dealt with according to our church procedures and in accordance to the law of the land,” reads the statement.

The church added: “We are working with the concerned parties on the ground and NCCK to ensure we do a thorough investigation and we shall release the full findings to the public in due course.”

They further sought to allay any concerns by families who have their kin at the facility.

“We need to make it very clear that those with aged members of their families housed at Thogoto Home for the Aged need not be alarmed as their family members are well and safe,” added the statement.

The response comes after a report by BBC Africa Eye made strong and disturbing allegations of neglect and abuse of vulnerable elderly residents at PCEA Thogoto Care Home.

In an exposé one of the staff, revealed that they cane the elderly to calm them down adding that some of them were violent when left alone.

Some of the staff were also reported to dump food on the table for those who could not feed themselves.

In such cases, some of the victims went days without food and some even starved to death.

Originally established by the Women’s Guild of the local PCEA church, the care home now operates independently and houses approximately 50 elderly individuals.
