Police ban ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests

Nairobi police commander bans planned 'Occupy Parliament' protests to oppose the Finance Bill 2024
Nairobi police commander bans planned ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests to oppose the Finance Bill 2024.
Nairobi Region Police Commander Adamson Bungei has dismissed any plan to organize protests in Nairobi on Tuesday to oppose the Finance Bill 2024.
The police boss confirmed that no one applied for a gathering or picketing permit as expected.
He said the protest was illegal and banned.
Bungie said they received a ‘faulty’ document dated June last year which doesn’t meet the protest permission threshold.
“The notification they left at Central is dated June 17, 2023. It is faulty. We can’t allow them. No demonstration.”
“Kenyans should be allowed to do their business and those with grievances should direct them where they know well.”
“We have heightened our patrols within the CBD to ensure there is no disruption of businesses. Nobody applied for any license or permit to do the protests,” said Bungei.

The police chief said they have mobilized officers to ensure that any gathering is dispersed instantly in the CBD.
This comes as activists led by Boniface Mwangi have already issued an elaborate plan for the protest dubbed ‘Occupy Parliament’ against the Finance Bill 2024.
Dubbed ‘Occupy Parliament’, the demonstrations are meant to pressure lawmakers against passing the bill which the House will consider on Tuesday.
Kenyans online have been rallying around the protests, sharing posters and guidelines ahead of the demos outside Parliament buildings in the central business district.
