Police officer arrested and detained after robbing and assaulting Machakos varsity student.
A police officer is being held on robbery with violence charges after allegedly assaulting a university student and robbing him of his phone and other valuables.
Two Machakos University students were allegedly approached by the officer, Kevin Sila, and his accomplice, David Muringu, last night as they were riding their bicycles to their leased housing.
The event occurred on Sunday, December 4, in Machakos, according to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
The police officer was allegedly collaborating with an accomplice who was also detained, according to the DCI’s statement.
The two accosted two Machakos University students as they rode a bicycle to their leased accommodations, according to the DCI’s statement detailing the event.
“The duo who were on a motorbike registration number KMTE 33W had flagged down the students in the wee hours of the morning,” the statement by the DCI read in part.
After the students stopped, the officer, reportedly with his accomplice descended on one of them with resounding slaps as they ransacked his pockets.
“His roommate however managed to escape the attack narrowly and took flight screaming, attracting neighbors who also happened to be students from the university,” the statement continued.
Machakos University students swiftly responded to the distress call of their comrade and rescued him from the wrath of the officer and his accomplice.
After returning the stolen phone, the officer tried to leave the area, but his attempts were unsuccessful because his colleagues from the Machakos police station arrived and arrested both the officer and his accomplice.
They were whisked away from the students and taken to Machakos police station pending arraignment in court.
Students from Machakos University later engaged police in running battles as they protested the incident’s aftermath by going on strike.
The two are expected to face robbery with violence charges.
