Police launch investigations after an officer shoots self dead after receiving a phone call from his wife while on night patrol.

According to Nyatike sub-county police commander Dorothy Migarusha, the deceased, identified as Gipson Omari shot himself on Sunday morning in the presence of his wife and children.

The 31-year-old officer shot himself in the chest and died at Life Care hospital while undergoing treatment.

Before shooting himself dead, the sub-county police commander said, the deceased had been doing a night patrol together with another police officer. 

She said the officer excused himself at around 3.30 am to rush to his house to attend to some issues.

Migarusha said the other police officer who was doing the night patrol with the deceased heard a gunshot a few minutes later and he rushed to Omari’s house only to find him bleeding on the chest.

She said other police officers responded and he was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Nyatike sub-county police commander said their preliminary investigation has established that the deceased got a phone call from his wife who wanted him to buy electricity tokens. 

Migarusha said the deceased’s wife indicated that Omari arrived in the house and before engaging her, he shot himself.

The body of the deceased has been moved to Migori level four hospital mortuary pending police investigations.
