Comedian Fred Omondi was hit by a matatu and died on the spot according to a police statement.

According to a police report, the accident occurred on the morning of Saturday, June 15, near Caltex Petrol Station along Kangundo Road.

Fred had boarded a passenger motorcycle that police said was on the wrong side of the road.

It collided with a Forward Sacco-owned matatu heading to the Nairobi city centre from Kayole.

The collision happened near Consolidated Bank.

The rider was rushed to the Mama Lucy Hospital for treatment; the deceased’s body lies at the hospital’s morgue ahead of the postmortem.

Fellow comedians and prominent Kenyans took to social media to mourn.

“Today at 6 am, I received the saddest call ever. It hurts…Fred, I thank God for the time He gave us together, bro, you’ve been part of my career and growth in the industry, you always treated me as a brother and hosted me when I had nowhere to go, gave me a stage and paid me, together we started club comedy shows, I will always treasure the moment we shared the stage together,” said Terence Creative.

Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o, who interacted with Fred in the comedic scenes, also mourned him.

“Go well bro,” he wrote.

“The late Fred Omondi was an MC and event organizer during my daughter’s graduation party. He did a tremendous job by bringing on board top artists, dancers, and gospel singers to entertain our guests. On behalf of my family, I pray God comforts and gives the Omondi family enough strength to sail through this storm. Receive my sincere condolences,” mourned Sonko.

“The creative industry has lost a gem. Fred Omondi brightened our living rooms with his addictive comedy renditions. That he has tragically lost his life in a road accident is heart-rending. I commiserate with his family friends and his fans. May his soul find perfect peace,” Omanga said.

“Rest easy Freddy. Very sad. That driver who hit you and ran. I hope he/she will find it in their heart to come and apologize and condole with the family,” said Daniel Ndambuki.

“Go well,” wrote Eric Omondi.

Fred rose the ranks to be among the country’s top cream in the comic scenes after making a debut in the Churchill Show.
