Police take action after a woman is assaulted during ex-husband's burial

Three suspects were on Monday, March 24, arrested in connection to assaulting a woman during a burial in Nyamira County.

This is after a disturbing video of the woman being physically assaulted by the trio went viral online sparking outrage from Kenyans.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the incident happened on Friday, March 21, 2025.

According to DCI, the suspects were forcing the woman to participate in traditional rituals against her will.

The woman had been married to her late husband for over nine years before they separated.

“The suspects, identified as Robert Pokea Sarudi, 43, Bismark Ondiek Sarudi, 40, and Lameck Ogindo Osoro, 27, allegedly forced the woman to participate in traditional rituals against her will, where they assaulted her inflicting injuries on her body.

“The incident occurred on March 21, 2025, when the woman, who had been married to her late ex-husband for over nine years, found herself caught in a troubling family dispute,” read part of the statement.

DCI noted that after the woman separated with her ex-husband, they lost touch for years, and was contacted by her mother-in-law and asked to bring her children to their father’s funeral after he passed on in a road accident.

“As the grieving family gathered to bid farewell, the woman was ambushed by her in-laws who insisted she partake in the burial customs of throwing soil into the grave. When she refused their demands, they reportedly unleashed a brutal attack, accusing her of being responsible for her husband’s death,” DCI stated.

The investigative agency disclosed that the three suspects were trailed and arrested in the Mwongorisi sub-location and taken to Kiambere Police Station, where they are undergoing processing before being arraigned in court.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional suspects involved in the incident.
