President Ruto announces plans for construction of Nairobi-Thika Expressway next year
President William Ruto has announced the government’s plan to construct a 60-kilometre expressway from Nairobi City to Thika town in Kiambu County.
Addressing Kenyans during the 62nd Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, December 12, Ruto revealed that the expressway would be constructed to complement the existing Thika road.
According to the Head of State, the construction is expected to commence in 2026 in a move aimed at facilitating easier and faster movement of people and goods between the two countries.
In his speech, the President said that the 60-kilometre highway would begin near the existing Nairobi expressway at Museum Hill interchange and terminate at Thika town.
“A lot of Kenyans live in Thika, and the current Thika road is very congested, and there are a lot of vehicles using the Thika road. I want to announce that next year, we will construct an expressway from Thika to Nairobi at Museum Hill,” Ruto said.
Ruto did not, however, issue the exact date when the project would begin, maintaining that the expressway was essential to reduce the constant traffic congestion witnessed along the ever-busy route.

He made the declaration while acknowledging the challenges faced by many Kenyans who mostly commute between Nairobi and other neighbouring counties.
During the event, the President also outlined plans to construct other major roads linking Nairobi and the neighbouring counties, such as Kajiado and Machakos.
The latest development comes amid Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s push for the establishment of Thika town as the country’s fifth city after Nakuru.
However, it is not the first time the government has hinted at constructing an expressway from Nairobi to Thika town. In August last year, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) revealed plans to construct a new road connecting the two towns.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with KeNHA, Wamatangi noted the new infrastructure development in Thika would transform the town into an industrial Smart City.
The governor noted that the multi-million-shilling project was aimed at easing congestion and improving mobility within the town. He, however, at the time, did not provide the exact date when the project would begin.
“Currently, the team is working on designs, after which public consultations will be conducted before the projects commence,” Governor Wamatangi said.
