President Ruto mourns Wafula Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader

President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning former Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati

President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning former Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

In a statement on Friday, February 21, President Ruto described Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow.

“Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest In Peace,” the President stated.

Chebukati passed away on Thursday, February 20 night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula eulogized Chebukati as an eminent jurist, a steadfast defender of the rule of law, and a dedicated public servant whose contributions will be remembered for generations.

“His passing is a profound loss not only to his family but also to the legal fraternity, the electoral governance space, and the nation as a whole. His legacy of integrity and service will continue to inspire future generations of legal minds and public servants dedicated to upholding the rule of law and advancing democracy,” said Wetang’ula.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru said that Chebukati’s leadership at IEBC leadership was instrumental in strengthening Kenya’s democratic processes.

“Saddened to learn of the passing of former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati. His leadership was instrumental in strengthening Kenya’s democratic processes and upholding the integrity of our electoral system. I extend my sincere condolences to his family and all those affected by this loss,” Waiguru stated.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen mourned the former IEBC chairperson as a true patriot and a man of immense integrity.

“Wafula Chebukati will be remembered for his principled leadership, courage, and fidelity to the Constitution. A true patriot and a man of immense integrity, Chebukati professionally steered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through two elections. My thoughts are with the family, friends, legal fraternity, and the nation at large during this difficult time of profound loss,” he stated.

Public CS Justin Muturi on his part said Chebukati played a central role in managing elections in Kenya and ensuring democracy is upheld.

“Kenya mourns a leader who played a central role in managing elections and ensuring the democratic will of the people was upheld. His service to the nation will be remembered, and his contribution to strengthening our electoral system will not be forgotten,” he stated.

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya also condoled with Chebukati’s family saying his death is a significant loss for the nation.

“With the passing of former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, we mourn a significant loss. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace,” he stated.

Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson for a full term of six years between January 2017 and January 2023 and oversaw the 2017 and 2022 general elections.

Chebukati leaves behind his wife Mary Chebukati, and their three children Jonathan, Rachel, and Emmanuel Chebukati.
