Prisoner vanishes from heavily guarded Makadara Law Courts after escaping police custody.
According to a police report, the prisoner was set to appear before the courts to answer to charges of stealing a motor vehicle in Dagoretti, an offence that was reported at Kasarani Police Station on Monday, April 22.
The prisoner, who was handcuffed, was being transported to the law courts under the escort of two police officers.
Upon arrival, one of the officers alighted from the vehicle and proceeded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) located within the compound.
The police officer sought to have the miscellaneous application commissioned before returning the vehicle.
Moments later, the corporal received a call from his colleague who informed him that the prisoner had escaped.
Hurrying to the vehicle, the prisoner, who was previously in the back seat had vanished. The officers alerted their colleagues to find out if anyone had spotted the suspect and establish if he was still in the compound.

After a search operation, the officers identified a footprint at the fence outside the DPP’s office, indicating that it might have been the suspect’s escape route.
The driver, who was interrogated by his colleagues, acknowledged that he had dozed off for a few minutes before realizing that the prisoner had escaped. He pointed out that he did not hear any sound from the vehicle and was surprised to find the prisoner gone.
“He is believed to have escaped over the fence at Makadara at the ODPP office as a foot mark was seen on the fence on where he stamped before escaping. The driver is said to have been sleeping when the prisoner escaped,” the police report read in part.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Office in Buruburu visited the court to document it and lead the investigations to hunt down the prisoner.
