Nanyuki residents protest against the British Army Camp (BATUK) over discrimination and sexual harassment.

A group of incensed Nanyuki locals blocked the Nanyuki-Rumuruti road on Thursday to protest the unjust treatment of employees at the British Army Training Unit (BATUK) Camp.

They complained about unfair hiring practices, stating that no locals were receiving jobs at the camp.

Women in the camp also reported incidences of sexual harassment, alleging that they were forced to give in to sex demands in order to keep their jobs.

The locals allege that the few who have had the opportunity to work in the camp have not been leaving the Nanyuki town camp to other training grounds such as Lolndaiga and Archers Post while other people from other regions have been coming to work at the Nanyuki camp.

People working as casuals in the camps prefer external assignments since they get an opportunity to earn allowances.

Attempts by the Laikipia County Commissioner to reconcile the residents with the British soldiers on Wednesday bore no fruit as the people persisted and called for immediate fair treatment.
