Protests break out in Nairobi CBD with calls for DIG Lagat to resign over Albert Ojwang murder

Protests took place in Nairobi’s CBD on Thursday, June 12, primarily driven by demands for justice for Albert Ojwang’ and calls for the Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat to resign.

The demonstrations saw Kenyans gathering at various locations, including Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, and Jeevanjee Gardens.

The protesters expressed frustrations over police misconduct and demanded accountability from senior police officials over Ojwang’s death.

With the demonstrations gaining momentum, police lobbed tear gas at the protesters, with additional units being deployed to calm the situation.

Notably, the protests coincided with the National Assembly’s presentation of the budget statement in the CBD, leading to a heavy police presence.

In the recent past, there have been calls for Lagat to step aside after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that he lodged a complaint against Ojwang, leading to his arrest and subsequent death in police custody.

Speaking at the Central Police Station, Kanja said the complaint by Lagat was about his name being tarnished.

“The complaint was about his name being tarnished; it was on that basis that investigations were being carried out because he (Lagat) also has a right to be protected by the same law,” he said.

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot is among the political figures who urged Lagat to step aside, noting that he finds himself in a complicated position, having launched a complaint against the late Ojwang.

“When you are a deputy of an institution, and you make a complaint which is the right thing to do, but unfortunately, the situation gets complicated by the fact that officers who report to him went and picked this particular young man, and he died under very mysterious circumstances.

“Nobody has said you (Lagat) are guilty, but for the country to appreciate and for me, even as your friend, to appreciate and to be clear of my conscience, you step aside until investigations are concluded so that we know what really happened. Otherwise, as it is, no person of good conscience, even if you were to remain and stand firm on the things that are being said,” he said.
