Crisis as government keeps postponing Ksh 28B free education fund to public schools

Crisis as government keeps postponing Ksh 28B free education fund to public schools.

Public schools are facing a severe crisis due to the delayed release of funds by the government, despite promises made by Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu.

This delay in funding has placed a significant burden on schools, hindering their ability to provide quality education and support to students.

As a result, students and teachers are grappling with inadequate resources, deteriorating infrastructure, and compromised learning environments.

The government’s failure to fulfil its commitment jeopardises the education system and undermines the future of countless students.

Machogu had previously assured the public of timely and sufficient funding for public schools.

This is despite a series of assurances by Machogu with the latest being Tuesday, May 30, when he announced that the government would release KSh 28 billion shillings as capitation to primary schools, junior and senior secondary schools in the country by Friday, June 2.

“You know the amount we give per student is 22,240 and in the coming week, I am sure teachers are anxiously waiting. I want to make an undertaking that you are going to get capitation money for senior secondary,” Machogu said on June 20.

According to the school heads, the CS kept changing his timelines, including the latest when he promised schools that the funds would be disbursed by Friday, June 2.

“The amount of money that government is releasing this week in junior and senior secondary is to a total of KSh 28 billion,” he said.

Teachers speaking to the press on demand of anonymity said they have heard in the media but schools have continued to sink into a deep cash crunch.

“We only hear the news on the radio that the funds were meant to have reached the schools but we have not received any money,” one of the heads stated.

The government issues Ksh1,420 for every student in primary school, Ksh15,040 for every student in Junior Secondary School and Ksh22,240 for each Senior Secondary School student.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu was put on the spot by school principals over the continuous delay in the disbursement of funds to public schools.

However, the heads lamented that they had not received the Ksh28 billion promised, adding that learning and other school operations had been greatly affected.

Some principals added that they received the last disbursement of funds in January 2023.
