Raila congratulates Martha Karua for keeping cool despite provocation by Rigathi Gachagua during the deputy presidential debate.
Azimio presidential candidate, Raila Amollo Odinga has publicly praised her running mate Martha Wangari Karua for how she handled pressure during yesterday’s deputy presidential debate.
Martha Karua was paired against DP Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua.
The debate was held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) on Tuesday night, 19, July.
Gachagua on many occasions during the debate particularly attacked Karua for being president Uhuru’s’ project’ in the running mate position.
Gachagua took on President Kenyatta who is also the Azimio coalition party council chairman, accusing him of propagating corruption and being the master planner of the Raila Odinga-Martha Karua “project.”
“There is State capture by corruption cartels…organized criminal gangs who plunder our resources daily,” Gachagua said.
“He is crafting his succession through Raila Odinga… he will continue to govern this country outside his Constitutional mandate.”
But Martha Karua fought back the claims, accusing Gachagua of failing to understand the real meaning of State capture.
“I want to help Mr. Gachagua. State capture is the repurposing of the State to serve individuals rather than the public good.
Gachagua also accused Karua of walking out on former president Mwai Kibaki’s administration when he needed her most.
However, Karua said her resignation from Kibaki’s government was a matter of principle but that did not mean she disparaged the president.
She instead accused Gachagua’s boss, DP William Ruto of failing to do the honorable thing by resigning if he feels President Kenyatta’s government is not doing the right thing.

Meanwhile, Raila was impressed by his running mate’s conduct praising Karua’s level of coolness under pressure.
He claimed that Martha Karua’s level of poise would make her an extremely important vice president who could handle any situation with the utmost patience and serenity.
Taking to his twitter account, Raila said;
“Your poise, mastery of subject matters, and staying calm even when provoked were impressive. I congratulate my able deputy and team member @MarthaKarua”

The ruling Jubilee party has also accused Rigathi Gachagua of trying to provoke Martha Karua during the deputy presidential debate.
In a statement hours after the debate, Jubilee congratulated Karua for remaining calm and articulate during the debate.
“Well done Mama Martha Karua in a debate where the opponent’s agenda was to provoke you & attack individuals, you remained calm, composed, and articulate. The opponent made it clear that they only want the power to settle scores against the President and to free up proceeds of corruption so that he can finish his mansion and host Keshas,” the statement read in part.
