Raila denounces the police raid on former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s home.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday night, February 8, rushed to Matiang’i’s Karen home as the police surrounded his residence.

Soon after arriving at Matiang’i’s home in Karen, Raila denounced the action, calling it a witch hunt and barbarous.

He questioned why the various agencies didn’t wait until after dark to conduct a raid on his home to find a lawful solution.

Raila also promised to join in a nighttime vigil with other leaders to assure Matiang’i and his family’s safety.

He persisted in attacking the government, pointing out that the assault on the former CS was evidence of its illegitimacy.

“We are here and we will stand with Matiang’i and anybody else to ensure that the law of this country is respected,” he stated.

“If Matiang’i has committed a crime that warrants his arrest that should be made public and known to him This idea of arresting senior citizens at this hour of the night is unacceptable,” Odinga added.

According to the former Prime Minister, the motive behind Matiang’i’s attempted arrest was unclear, as neither the police nor his legal team had concrete information.

City lawyer Danstan Omari who was leading Matiani’is legal team noted that a battery of over 200 lawyers would be deployed to protect against any violation of his rights.

They, too, vowed to stand in solidarity, choosing to brave the cold night as the police surrounded the Karen residence.

The Wednesday, February 8, raid at the former CS’s home came two weeks after a group of former dignitaries who served in retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime openly castigated President William Ruto’s administration.

The former dignitaries characterized the Kenya Kwanza administration as “petty” and said they were hell-bent on revenge during their first public meeting since Kenyatta’s departure.

The government eventually reorganized the security of former President Uhuru and several of his important allies as a result of the incident at the residence of former Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.

In what Police Inspector General Japhet Koome referred to as a “rationing procedure” inside the police force, Matiang’i and former Principal Secretary Karanja Kibiccho saw their security personnel cut.

It should be noted that both President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, had sworn to refrain from utilizing the government’s institutions and the legal system to settle political disputes.
