Raila Odinga’s son, Raila Odinga Junior, has formally been installed as the head of the Raila Odinga family.
Raila Junior was given the mantle on Thursday, October 23, in a traditional ceremony held at the family home in Bondo, Siaya County.
Speaking during the event, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga said the ceremony is a symbolic transfer of leadership to the late Prime Minister’s son.
“This is a traditional ceremony to symbolically give the son of my brother, the late Raila Odinga, his son, Raila Odinga, the seat of power of the home.
“He is now the leader of this home, together with the mother. The mother will be there to give him all the advice he needs, but he must stand firm and lead the home as per our culture,” said Oburu.
The Siaya Senator clarified that the installation of Raila Junior was not political leadership but just the leadership of the family home.
Senator Oburu noted that he remains the chair of the larger Odinga family.
“This is not political leadership, but this is the leadership of the home, the larger Odinga family, which I chair, is still under me, just like his father was under me in the cultural leadership of the home,” he stated.

“Today is the fourth day, my brother was buried on Sunday last week, and if we count from Sunday to last night, it is exactly four nights and that is in our culture that after the fourth night, that is the day the funeral ends officially,” Oburu added.
During the installation, Raila Junior was shaved on the head by one of her grandmothers. He was then dressed in cultural attire and given a Luo shield and a spear to symbolize leadership of the home.
The event was attended by members of the Odinga family, relatives, community elders, and politicians.
