Raila Odinga reveals how Gachagua’s comments influenced his decision not to attend presidential debate

Raila Odinga reveals how Gachagua’s comments during the deputy debate influenced his decision not to attend the presidential debate.

Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga through his presidential campaign secretariat spokesman, Makau Mutua has explained how Rigathi Gachagua influenced his decision not to attend the presidential debate scheduled for today.

Makau Mutua said that the debate is fashioned to show the differences between president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

He added that they feared that the Kenya Kwanza team would continue breaching the debate rules as was witnessed during the running mates debate.

On Monday, July 25, Prof. Mutua said in an interview with K24 that Gachagua’s remarks and behavior during the debate caused the ODM leader to rethink his plans to face Deputy President William Ruto.

He said that the Kenya Kwanza team was determined to use the national platform to campaign against the Head of State who was not running for office, as seen by Gachagu’s focus on President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“He spent most of his time running against Uhuru who was not there. I think he broke many debate rules and pulled a piece of paper from his pocket at some point.

“We are not sure whether he had an earpiece and was being instructed on what to say. He was not there do debate Karua but talk about Uhuru,” he stated

In addition, Raila Raila’s spokesperson revealed that they had been hesitant to let Karua attend the deputy presidential debate.

He added that it was Narc Kenya’s leader’s desire to debate Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua.

“We struggled with the issue of whether Karua should have gone to debate Gachagua given his history and the ongoing court cases. Karua wanted to debate him as so she did.

“What we saw was someone who was not fit to share the podium with Karua.”
