Raila speaks to international media ahead of Supreme Court hearing
Raila has given his way forward ahead of the Supreme Court hearing in a petition challenging Ruto’s win in the August election.
Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga has stated that he will accept the Supreme Court’s decision in the petition challenging the declaration of Willian Ruto as president-elect.
Speaking to Reuters on August 29, the leader of Azimio asserted his victory in the elections of August 9 and exhibited confidence in the nation’s highest court.
The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party said that the Supreme Court’s evidence was convincing while reiterating his desire to be recognized as the winner of the election.
He further justified his remarks by asserting that he had never sought to sway the judgment of the seven-judge bench, which was presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
“I really do not want to appear as if I am blackmailing the Supreme Court, I want the court to hear the case impartially and make a ruling that is impartial which respects democracy,” he stated.
Raila further in his remarks ahead of the Supreme Court hearing argued that the petitions before the court will help Kenya in the long run by sealing loopholes in the country’s electoral processes.
“We will try to ensure that we do not have a repeat of what has happened. We do not want to have the voice of the people to be muzzled through manipulations as was witnessed in the just concluded polls,” Raila asserted.
The statements by Raila barely came hours before the Supreme Court convened a pre-trial conference for the nine petitions filed before the court.
The Supreme Court is set to begin the petition hearing on August 31 expected to render a decision on Raila’s petition on Monday, September 5.
