Renowned Human Rights Lawyer Senior counsel Pheroze Nowrojee is dead

Veteran human rights lawyer and Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has died at the age of 84.

The news of his passing was shared by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo on Saturday, April 5, expressing deep sorrow at his loss.

“Quite saddened to learn that my senior, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee has passed on! A quintessential advocate who presented the best in court advocacy. Rest in power, Senior!” he said.

Former IEBC commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe also mourned Nowrojee, highlighting his dedication to justice.  

“A giant has fallen today. I am really sorry Villoo, Binaifer, Sia and Elchi for this huge loss. May you be comforted by the memories you shared with Pheroze. Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee was a brilliant legal mind who argued his cases in Court with eloquence and humor. 

“As a fighter for human rights and good governance, a Pan-Africanist, a scholar and a writer, he leaves behind a rich legacy that we must emulate. I fondly remember his powerful speech in Atlanta, Georgia where he stood firmly with the GenZs in their revolution. Rest in Peace, Comrade,” she said.

On the other hand, renowned lawyer and former Central Imenti MP Gitobu Imanyara remembered Nowrojee as a patriot and mentor.  

“I know all of you will be as shocked as I am to learn that our friend, our mentor and a great patriot Pheroze Nowrojee has passed on a few hours ago. What a loss to the legal profession and to this country. As we mourn his death, let us also celebrate an exemplary life well lived,” he said.

Lawyer Willis Otieno described Nowrojee as a man of unmatched intellect and dignity, praising his multifaceted legacy.

“Quite saddened to learn that my senior, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, has passed on. A quintessential advocate; measured, brilliant, and dignified, who embodied the finest traditions of courtroom advocacy. 

“A teacher, mentor, human and constitutional rights lawyer, poet, and writer, SC Nowrojee leaves behind a towering legacy of intellect, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice. His words stirred minds, his actions changed lives. Kenya bows in honour. Rest in power, Senior,” he said.

Nowrojee’s was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya since 1967, of the High Court of Tanzania since 1970 and of the High Court of Zanzibar since 1989. 

Over the years, he has also represented clients in Uganda and the Seychelles, reinforcing his reputation as one of the region’s foremost legal minds.

In addition to his legal practice, Nowrojee lectured at the University of Dar es Salaam from 1974 to 1977, the University of Nairobi between 1979 and 1985, and at the Kenya School of Law from 1968 to 1970 and from 1978 to 1985. 

Pheroze was a stalwart of the legal and human rights movement in Kenya, including serving as the NCEC Convener and Spokesperson.

He was, till his death, the Chair of the Asian African Heritage Trust which has played a very significant role in advancing Kenya’s position and progress in diplomacy, peace, friendship and education worldwide.
