Driver plunges into the Indian Ocean at Likoni after losing control while disembarking from a ferry.

A lorry plunged into the Indian Ocean on Saturday, December 24, as the driver was disembarking from a ferry to the mainland.

John Elungata, the Coast Regional Commissioner, who confirmed the event, said the driver lost control and that the lorry’s brakes weren’t working at the time.

Elungata said that there were two people inside the truck when the incident took place.

He added that the team that was on the ground rushed to save the lives of the two.

“It was disembarking from the ferry but the driver lost control and the car plunged into the sea,” he stated.

He said that the driver overloaded the lorry with cargo, suggesting that the accident might have been prevented.

He expressed that such incidents had become rampant even as he launched an operation to arrest those who break the required load limit for lorries.

“Our officers under a joint security team have started a crackdown on vehicles breaking the law. We cannot allow such drivers to inconvenience other people” he stated.

The truck was transporting cement from Mombasa island and plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni Crossing Channel Mainland side.

Efforts to remove the vehicle from the waters are ongoing.
