Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja reveals Uhuru Park will be opened by the end of March 2024

In an update via X on Saturday, March 16, Sakaja explained that the military contractor who renovated the public park was handing over the project to the Nairobi County government.

Sakaja noted that the county was making final payments to the contractor before the park is opened to the public adding that it would be free to use.

“Uhuru Park is being opened very soon, latest end of this month. Military Contractor handing over and final payments being done. And it’ll be free for all to use,” said Sakaja.

At the same time, the Nairobi Governor mentioned that the Central Park would take a little longer before being opened as contracted works are yet to be completed.

“Central Park is taking a while longer. Contracted works are yet to be completed. Will give details soon,” Sakaja added.

The Nairobi City boss issued the update after public outcry on the extended closure of the recreational facility.

Uhuru Park and Central Park were closed to the public in February 2022 by the now-defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) for a facelift.

Before its closure in 2022 Kenyans seeking rest could walk into the park and relax. The Uhuru Park was also a getaway for families during weekends and national holidays.

In December 2023, Governor Sakaja opened Uhuru Park briefly to Kenyans who did not travel upcountry to celebrate the Christmas festivities.
