Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stormed parts of the Mt Kenya region to prepare the ground ahead of a major regional tour by key opposition figures.

Gachagua, the leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), is making several stopovers en route to Meru County, the epicentre of the planned tour on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

He has already made appearances in Embu and Chuka, where hundreds of his supporters turned out to welcome him.

“On my way to Meru for public engagement, I had an unexpected stopover after residents of Chuka in Tharaka Nithi County blocked my convoy, asking me to speak with them,” Gachagua posted on his X account on Friday.

“I truly appreciate your warmth and engagement; our collective effort towards a better Kenya is unstoppable.”

Chuka is the political backyard of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, who hails from the Mount Kenya East region.

Gachagua has recently intensified efforts to mobilise the Mount Kenya region behind the opposition and has been traversing multiple towns to push for regional unity.

While he initially focused on Central Kenya—holding several roadside rallies—the DCP boss is now ramping up for a charm offensive in Mount Kenya East.

Opposition leaders are expected to traverse Meru County on June 20, 2025, in a bid to consolidate support and secure votes ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Key figures expected to take part in the tour include Gachagua, PLP leader Martha Karua, DAP-K party boss Eugene Wamalwa, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

This will mark the first joint tour of Mount Kenya by opposition leaders as they seek to cement their influence in the vote-rich region ahead of the 2027 elections.

Since unveiling their unity plans in April, the leaders have not mounted any aggressive joint campaigns in the region.

The Mount Kenya bloc was instrumental in President William Ruto’s 2022 victory over his then-main rival, Raila Odinga, delivering more than 3.5 million votes.
