Several people were reported injured on Thursday, August 21, around the City Cabanas area along Mombasa Road after rowdy youths pelted stones at DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua’s procession.

Chaos erupted as what appeared to be organized groups of young men disrupted the former Deputy President’s procession from JKIA, forcing police to deploy crowd control measures to restore order.

The disruption had earlier brewed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where groups of youths had arrived on bodabodas, creating security concerns for the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

The suspicious arrival of these youths forced airport security to delay Gachagua’s departure from JKIA as they assessed the situation.

When Gachagua’s procession reached the City Cabanas area, it encountered what appeared to be the same group of youths who had caused concerns at the airport.

This time, however, their intentions became violently clear as they began hurling stones at the convoy carrying the former Deputy President and his allied leaders.

Photos from the scene show crowds of people scattered across the road, with some individuals appearing to carry clubs and other objects.

The procession came to a complete halt at the City Cabanas area as security forces worked to bring the situation under control and ensure the safety of the political leaders and their supporters.

At the time of the attack, Gachagua had been standing through the sunroof of his vehicle, waving and interacting with his supporters in his characteristic manner.

The stone-throwing incident forced him to quickly retreat inside his car for safety as the situation became dangerous.

The violent confrontation appears to justify the massive security deployment that had been witnessed earlier at JKIA and along Mombasa Road.

Gachagua’s procession is expected to stop at the Nairobi CBD before proceeding to the Kamukunji ground, where he will address Kenyans.
