Russian mercenary leader of the Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin believed to be among those killed in a plane crash near Moscow

Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin believed to be among those killed in a plane crash near Moscow.

A private jet en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg crashed on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of all 10 lives on board, according to Russian emergency officials.

Among the passengers was Yevgeny Prigozhin, chief of the Russian private mercenary group Wagner.

The crash occurred in the Tver region, situated over 100 kilometers north of Moscow.

Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsia, reported that Yevgeny Prigozhin was listed as a passenger on the private jet that met its unfortunate fate.

Rosaviatsia has declared the commencement of a probe into the tragic incident involving an Embraer plane crash in the Tver region, which occurred during the evening hours.

The agency has verified that the passenger roster includes the name and surname of Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Earlier reports had initially indicated that a private jet had crashed in the Tver region, leading to the tragic demise of ten individuals.

The plane, en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg, had a total of seven passengers and three crew members on board.

While Russian authorities confirmed that Yevgeny Prigozhin’s name appeared on the passenger list, it remained unclear whether he had been on board the ill-fated flight.

Speculation arose as to whether Prigozhin was indeed on the aircraft.

Prigozhin’s Wagner private mercenary force had previously fought alongside Russia’s regular army in Ukraine.

In late June, he orchestrated a brief armed mutiny against Russia’s military leadership. Subsequently, the Kremlin announced his exile to Belarus, accompanied by a directive for his fighters to either retire, join him in Belarus, or transition into the Russian military.

In July 2023, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said Prigozhin is no longer in Belarus.

As authorities continue their investigations into the crash, Russia mourns the loss of lives in this tragic incident that has taken the country’s attention.

This comes after Prigozhin released the footage while dressed in camouflage attire and holding a rifle and was reportedly in the Sahel region in central Africa where there has been a coup d’état in Niger.

Wagner is reportedly in talks with the military junta in Niger that is looking to raise forces to suppress a jihadi insurrection that has been plaguing the country for years.

Prigozhin talked about Russia’s role in making the continent “free”.
