Ruto announces plan to move Dandora dumpsite

President William Ruto has announced plans to remove garbage from the Dandora dumpsite as part of a broader national and county government initiative to clean up Nairobi.

Speaking on Sunday at AIC Church Pipeline in Nairobi, the President said the national government has reached an agreement with the Nairobi City County Government to jointly finance a comprehensive waste management programme aimed at transforming the capital.

“We have agreed to clean the city of nairobi. Nairobi cannot be the city in the garbage. We have sat down with the governor. I will get money from the national government so that we add to that of the county government so that we can clean the city of Nairobi,” Ruto stated.

The President revealed that a new landfill site has been identified in Ruai. At the same time, the long-standing Dandora dumpsite will undergo treatment as waste removal begins gradually.

According to Ruto, garbage will be relocated from Dandora in phases rather than all at once, with plans underway to establish a modern waste treatment facility that will convert refuse into fertiliser, energy, and other usable products.

“Already the contract has been given. We have found a land in Ruai. the land fill in Dandora is going to be treated. So the garbage will be removed from Dandora. Bit by bit, not at once, we want to start to build where we will clean the garbage so that we manufacture fertiliser, energy and other things,” he added.

He further disclosed that contracts for the project have already been awarded, signalling the start of implementation.

Ruto said garbage collection will officially begin on April 1, starting from residential estates and urban centres, as part of efforts to restore cleanliness and order in the city.

The President added that the government is targeting completion of the waste treatment plant by 2027, noting that consultations with key stakeholders are ongoing to ensure smooth implementation.

“I have told those concerned that I want to work with them so that by 2027, the treatment plant will be ready, but we will begin collecting the garbage from April 1, from our estate and town, so that we clean the city of Nairobi,” the President noted.

At the same service, Nairobi Governor Johnstone Sakaja revealed that the President has pumped in over Ksh 4 billion to help finance the program, in an effort to ensure the capital remains clean.
