Ruto slams Uhuru on reducing maize flour prices

Ruto slams Uhuru on reducing maize flour prices to the benefit of Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

On Monday, July 18, Deputy President William Ruto responded to a government order that reduced the cost of maize flour by giving millers subsidies.

The DP said that President Uhuru Kenyatta was exploiting the price of maize flour to support Raila Odinga for the presidency.

Speaking at a rally in Kamukunji, the UDA presidential candidate read mischief in the government’s apparent ability to suddenly subsidize the price of flour.

He contended that the costs ought to have decreased earlier if the government truly had the interests of the people in mind.

“When we told them that they had destroyed the food production programme in the country, they blamed it on the war in Ukraine. Why did you leave Kenyans to suffer?

“Today, the war is still ongoing yet they now claim that they want to reduce the cost of flour just because there will be an election on August 9. Kenyans are not fools!” he stated.

Ruto condemned the plan as useless, saying it was too late and too little. He predicted that Kenyans would cast ballots to expel Uhuru and his handshake companion.

The DP continued by saying that the edict, along with keeping the price of gasoline in the most recent pricing review, were distractions and would only offer a temporary fix to the issue of poor food production.

“We will take the unga but we are going to vote with a plan to make sure that every Kenyan has food,” he said.

“Kenyans have already decided… whether you lower the prices or not you will go home on August 9.”

Government directive on maize flour prices

The minimum retail price for a two-kilogram package of maize flour was ordered by the Ministry of Agriculture to decrease from Ksh230 to Ksh100 with immediate effect on July 18.

Under the directive, a 1-Kilogramme packet would retail for not more than Ksh52 while the 500-gram packet would retail for a maximum of Ksh30. Notably, the reprieve would only be temporary as it would lapse after a month.

“The Ministry of Agriculture shall subsidize the price of maize flour being produced/sold by the miller for a period of four (4) weeks from the date of this contract,” the statement added.

The flour will now retail at Sh100, a drop by Sh130.
