Salva Kiir struggles to read speech after being elected EAC chair amid concerns over his health

South Sudan President Salva Kiir struggles to read his speech as the East African Community (EAC) chairman
South Sudan President Salva Kiir struggles to read his speech as the East African Community (EAC) chairman.
While addressing the heads of state on November 25, 2023, for the first time as the EAC chair, President Kiir struggled to read out his speech.
His address was a painfully unbearable display of the cognitive ravages of premature aging and ill health.
Salva Kiir, who is 72, was obviously confused, and at times unable to follow the text he was reading
He began his speech by thanking the dignitaries and acknowledging the Presidents who were present in the meeting.
However, President Kiir made a slip-up when recognising Tanzania President Samia Suluhu and President of Congo Felix Tshisekedi.
“Your Excellency Samia Suluhu, President of the United Republic of Rwanda..of.. Tanzania, Your Excellency Felix Tshisekedi representing President of Uganda.. of Congo,” he said.
He, however, corrected himself and mentioned the correct country with the help of the EAC Secretary General.
He went on to read his speech with some parts proving to be hard for him to read.
President Kiir officially took on the role of chair of the EAC a regional economic bloc succeeding Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye.

This comes amid questions over the health condition of President Salva Kiir.
However, the South Sudan government has been refuting claims that President Salva Kiir is unwell, saying he’s “in good health”.
In an earlier interview, Cabinet Affairs minister, Martin Elia Lomuro advised the public to ignore “hateful rumours coming from critics abroad and on social media” against the South Sudanese leader.
“People should not listen to lies on social media and those spreading hate in the diaspora. I have been with His Excellency the president and I can assure you he is fine, healthy, and working now as I speak to you. His voice has improved and there is no problem with it,” explained the minister.
He added, “His [Kiir] health is perfect. There is nothing to worry about”.
