Government set to resume second phase of exhumation at Shakahola after completing 112 postmortems

Government set to resume second phase of exhumation at Shakahola after completing 112 postmortems.

The government has completed postmortems on 112 bodies found in Shakahola village, Kilifi County, chief pathologist Johansen Oduor announced Friday after conducting the final 12.

Following the end of these initial exams, detectives are now set to return to the village to exhume more bodies from mass graves, in the probe into cult leader Paul Mackenzie.

During a press briefing on Friday, May 5, government pathologist Johansen Oduor disclosed that he had conducted 112 autopsies.

He explained that they were now ready to start another round of exhuming bodies from the forest.

Oduor explained that they would first send a team to see whether the area was ready following heavy rains that have pounded the area.

“We intend to commence the process of exhumation. There is a team there tomorrow (Saturday) to look at the grounds to see whether they are ready for the second phase of exhumation. Once we exhume the remaining, we’ll start again postmortem,” Oduor said.

Oduor explained that from his assessment, the majority of the deaths in Shakahola were caused by starvation.

He added that from the 112 bodies, the majority were adults, adding that some were strangled to death while others were hit on the head.

“The total number of bodies that we’ve done an autopsy on is 112.

Majority of them were starvation. I can’t remember the exact number, but the majority of them were from starvation. We found some who had head injuries, some who were strangled, and some who were unable to determine the cause of death because of the level of decay. From what we’ve seen the number of adults were more,” he added.

Meanwhile, Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, speaking at the Shahakola Command Centre, addressed the matter of rescues, saying they had found three adults and five children.

“We have had one rescue from the forest and another from Mikindani in Mombasa, where a family of seven was found – two female adults and five children believed to be followers of Mackenzie,” Ms Onyancha said. They were evacuated to Malindi for counselling.
