Security forces thwart Al-Shabaab attack targeting police camp in Mandera County.

Security officers in Mandera have foiled an attempted raid by suspected Al-Shabaab militants at a police camp in the area.

According to authorities, the assault, which was targeted at the Elram camp guarded by members of the Anti-stock Theft Unit (ASTU), lasted about ten minutes.

In a report, the militants fired explosives at the camp in the Friday evening incident prompting officers to respond.

Officers are currently following the attackers who are rumored to have fled to the eastern part of the camp.

However, there were no casualties reported in the incident.

“The attack was well repulsed, the explosives that were fired by the militias-one rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) landed inside the camp and the other outside causing a fire inside and outside the camp,” reads the report.

The attack at the camp comes at a time where there has been resurgence of attacks in the Northern region of Kenya by Al-Shabaab millitants.

Security agencies have ramped up their war against the militants operating near the main border.

The attack also comes after Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi apprehended a 41-year-old individual suspected of affiliations with the notorious Al-Shabaab militia.

The undercover sleuths apprehended the suspect near a supermarket in the Riruta area of Dagorreti, Nairobi, on Friday, August 18.

Five sachets of a white narcotic material thought to be cocaine were found after an initial search of his pockets and backpack, which prompted the sleuths to interrogate him further.

Upon search at his house behind the supermarket, detectives recovered a Glock pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm calibre, Ksh31,000 in cash, and 25Kgs of 4-inch nails suspected to be used in the assembly of improvised explosives devices.
