Senator Cherargei wants Fred Matiang’i to explain extrajudicial killings witnessed in the country
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei now wants Fred Matiang’i to explain disappearances and extrajudicial killings witnessed in the country during his tenure as the Interior Cabinet Secretary.
In a statement on Friday, April 18, Cherargei said the former Interior CS should give answers to families who lost their kin through enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the previous administration.
The Nandi Senator claimed that during Matiangi’s tenure, many dead bodies were found in River Yala, Tsavo, Garissa, and in containers.
Senator Cherargei also demanded that Matiang’i answer why the government switched from analog to digital without following the law
“He should explain why he switched off the media by using force to switch over to digital without following the law. A threat to Media freedom,” Cherargei stated.
According to a report by Missing Voices, an organization documenting extra-judicial killings in Kenya, 168 Kenyans were killed or disappeared in police custody in 2020.

In 2021 and 2022, there were 219 and 153 cases of extrajudicial killings and disappearances, respectively.
In River Yala, Siaya County, at least 31 bodies were dumped and retrieved from the river between July 2021 and January 2022.
Matiang’i returned to the country on Thursday night from the United States (US), where he has been working with the World Bank.
The former Interior CS was received by Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, and UDA Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba.
Matiang’i has been fronted as the Jubilee party presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
