Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has called for the scrapping of the 10-year term limit for governors amid a flurry of discussions over the performance of various county heads.

Taking to social media on Monday, August 4, the senator outlined his rationale for the proposal, which he argues would incentivise the governors to work for the people and not loot public funds.

According to him, currently, governors use the 10-year cap to secure their futures, “the first five years grovelling and the next five looting.”

He further added that the short-term limits are disadvantageous to young governors.

“Maybe Kenya should scrap term limits for governors. Why cap leadership for young, capable leaders at 10 years?” he quipped.

“First 5 years are spent bootlicking, the next 5 looting. What if removing the limit made them focus on service, not survival? Just think about it.”

However, his sentiments were not well received, especially by his followers on social media.

While some highlighted some of the governors they believed would not benefit from additional terms, others felt that even the Members of Parliament who did not have a term limit still managed to disappoint term after term.

“You must really be inversely gifted if you think Arap Sang is capable after running down Nandi County. Of course, Mandago left UG County better than Gauteng.  Brilliant Sakaja is doing a good job generating garbage, and Susan Kihika should get 4 terms and sire 4 sets of twins,” one sarcastically opined.

What about MPs who’ve got no term limits but still don’t deliver?” another added, ” Kivutha Kibwana served his term and left and doesn’t bother anyone.”

The issue of term limits has been ongoing for a while now, with different politicians chipping in on the issue, including Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who famously suggested a 10-year term instead of the current five-year term.

However, President William Ruto has consistently distanced himself from the conversation, although a section of Kenyans continues to link the proposals back to him.
