Senior GSU officers redeployed in leadership shake-up

The Kenya Police Service has announced a new round of deployments involving several senior officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), following approval by the Deputy Inspector General.
In an internal memo dated Thursday, October 9, Commanding Officer of NPC Embakasi B and Magadi Field Campus, William Samoei, said the changes affect five officers who have been reassigned to new commands and roles within the service.
According to the memo, Godhard Kamau has been redeployed from his position as Commanding Officer, Recce Company Ruiru, to serve as the Deputy Commandant, GSU.
William Kiptoo Sawe, previously serving as Staff Officer, Operations GSU, has been appointed Commanding Officer, Recce Company Ruiru, taking over the leadership of one of the unit’s most elite formations.
At the same time, Ernest Cheruyot, who had been the Commanding Officer, Golf Company, will now serve as Staff Officer, Operations GSU.
The memo also details the redeployment of Charles Kases Losur, who moves from Staff Officer, Operations, Nairobi Region, to become Commanding Officer, Golf Company.
Additionally, Charles Chesir Kibowen, a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) previously based at GSU Headquarters, has been appointed Officer Commanding (OC) Basic Training Wing, NPC Embakasi B Campus.
Elsewhere, this comes two weeks after a quartet of police officers were arrested by their colleagues in Nairobi over their illegal behind-the-scenes trade.
The officers had been on the radar of the Operations Support Unit, whose detectives had been tipped about their dealings.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the suspects have a network in various parts of the country.
Their trade has been cited among the contributors to insecurity in the country.
The quartet comprises Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Ekidor Lotira Charles, who is stationed in Turkana, Corporal Isaac Kipngetich, who is attached to Turkana County Police Headquarters, Police Constable Ileli Cyrus Kisamwa, who is an armourer at the Central Firearms Stores in Industrial Area, and Constable Samson Muriithi Mutongu, a storeman also based in Industrial Area.
The OSU detectives established their alleged criminality after a detailed profiling, surveillance, and forensic investigation.
The detectives busted on Kipngetich while receiving a consignment of about 1,000 bullets.
The consignment was reported to have been sent by Constables Ileli and Mutongu; the rounds were to pass through Kipngetich before ending in Ekidor’s custody.
Recovered from them were a host of articles, including rounds, magazines, cleaning kits and government stores.
