A senior police officer in Migori County was arrested on Thursday after reporting for duty while under the influence of alcohol.

The officer was apprehended at Migori Teachers Training College during a Jukwaa la Usalama function chaired by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

According to a police report filed at Migori Police Station, the officer was subjected to an alcohol blow test at the venue, which confirmed he was intoxicated.

He was later taken to Migori County Hospital for further medical tests before being placed in custody.

Police said he is expected to face disciplinary action for being drunk while on duty and is awaiting further administrative measures.

The incident, which occurred at around 4.00 pm on September 11, 2025, was captured on video and widely shared on social media.

In the footage, CS Murkomen is seen questioning the officer after noticing he appeared to agree with everything being said at the meeting.

The officer introduced himself, stating his station and outlining challenges in his area, including alcoholism linked to local brewers and cross-border supply, as well as disputes between communities.

“I don’t know why you selected me; that is the issue. I request that you add us more officers,” he said.

Murkomen pressed further, asking whether police were actively working to curb alcoholism and if officers were drinking exhibits seized from illicit brewers. The officer denied this, insisting, “We do not do that.”

When asked if he consumed alcohol himself, the officer claimed he had flu symptoms that made him sound intoxicated.

“How will you supervise junior officers when you come to the CS’s event drunk?” Murkomen asked.

“I have the flu, not that I’m drunk, Sir. Yes, I’m very okay and sober,” the officer replied.

The CS later directed the Migori County Commander to investigate the matter.

During the forum, Murkomen also highlighted Migori’s central role in national development, citing its strategic location, rich agricultural potential, and thriving fishing and mining sectors.

However, he noted that challenges such as insecurity, community disputes and alcoholism were holding back progress and required urgent attention.
