Several people trapped as a half-demolished building collapses in Kiamaiko area of Mathare in Nairobi.
A couple of people are believed to have died with others trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in Nairobi’s Mathare North area on Tuesday, May 14.
Eyewitnesses say that over 10 people were scavenging for scrap metals in the building that had been marked for demolition.
The structure suddenly collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and children are also believed to be trapped. Residents say 3 people were rescued immediately.

The Kenya Red Cross Nairobi branch confirmed this in an X update. The humanitarian organisation said its rescuers were deployed to the scene.
“A building undergoing demolition has collapsed in the Mathare North area 2. There are fears that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. Our rescue team has been dispatched,” it said.
The process of demolishing the building was on a break, when its structure weakened and fell down.
