This incident marks the latest in a series of maritime accidents along the Kenyan coast in recent months.
Earlier in May this year, multiple boat capsizing incidents were reported across the coastal region, including one at Chanu Channel in Lamu East, where four people were on board and one person went missing. Three were rescued at Kiwayuu.
That same weekend saw three separate boats capsize at Vidazini and Mnarani in Kilifi County, and Mutuni in Lamu, prompting large-scale search and rescue operations by a multi-agency team that included the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Maritime Authority, Coast Guard, and county government officials.
The recurring maritime accidents have highlighted ongoing safety concerns regarding water activities along the coast, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Authorities had previously issued warnings about the region’s strong winds and high waves, leading to temporary closures of public beaches to protect residents and tourists.
