Several people were on Tuesday, April 23, reported to have been trapped in a multi-storey building in Nyamira, County.

This followed a heavy downpour in the region, causing buildings and other key infrastructure to collapse.

Search and rescue operations are already underway.

“The building was empty as it was condemned in 2014 and construction halted. The people who are trapped were in adjacent buildings which were destroyed during the incident,” residents said.

Police officers and other emergency responders are camping on the site to rescue other Kenyans who may be trapped in the rubble.

The incident happened a day after a perimeter wall collapsed in Ruaka, Kiambu County leading to the death of one person.

Kenya Met has warned Kenyans to exercise caution as intense downpour is expected to persist until early May.
