The Ministry of Health has assured Kenyans that the Social Health Authority (SHA) system is now fully functional.
This comes after claims that the system was not working properly, forcing patients to pay cash for treatment at some health facilities.
Health PS Harry Kimtai admitted that SHA portal encountered some challenges during the rollout on October 1 but they are working to restore normal functionality.
“We are pleased to confirm that the SHA claims system is fully operational,” he said in a statement on Friday, adding that over 12.6 million Kenyans have so far registered on SHA.
“The Ministry of Health appreciates the public’s continued patience and cooperation as we advance the roll-out of the Social Health Authority (SHA). While the transition has presented some challenges, we are actively addressing them to ensure a smooth and effective process,” the PS said.
He further said that the training for health facilities on the claims portal commenced on Friday at 3pm and will continue throughout the coming week.
Kimtai said currently, 232 out of 353 renal and oncology providers have committed to delivering services under SHA and this list will be published online.
“Pre-authorisation is not required for service provision to previously paid up NHIF members seeking renal and oncology care since they transitioned to SHA,” the PS said.

He added that registration is continuing nationwide with hospitals providing information and assisting the public with prompt registration.
“Beneficiaries can also easily self-register by dialing *147# or through the SHA website. Community health promoters and SHA-designated registration points are available for additional support,” Kimtai said.
He added that contributions from former NHIF members will be transferred into the SHA system.
“A Means Testing Instrument integrated into the system will determine contributions for non-salaried members,” the PS said.
The contracting process with healthcare providers is ongoing, the PS revealed, adding that as of Friday, all public health facilities and 1,577 private and faith-based health facilities had signed the contract with SHA.
PS Kimtai added that health facilities have been instructed not to deny services during the transition period.
