Shock as four police officers arrested while drinking in Kirinyaga despite closure order

Four police officers arrested for defying Governor Waiguru’s directive on closure of bars after they were caught drinking at a local pub in Kirinyaga.
Four police officers were on Sunday arrested at a drinking den in Kirinyaga, a day after the county’s governor, Anne Waiguru, ordered all bars and clubs to remain shut.
The officers, stationed in the Mwea-east sub-county, were found drinking at the Mutitu Andei Bar in Ngurubani, in direct violation of the directive.
The revelation came as a shock to local authorities and residents alike as the officers were nabbed just a day after the directive was issued.
According to Robert Ngaruiya, the Tebere location’s chief, a concerned member of the public reported the officers to authorities.
After receiving the tip, law enforcement raided the bar and detained the officers.
The bar owner was also arrested, but several other customers escaped.
Three of the four detained officers are from the Administration Police (AP), and the fourth works at the Wanguru police station.

Residents expressed frustration and disbelief at the officers’ brazen disregard for the law, particularly in light of the recent tragedy involving tainted alcohol in the Mwea-West sub county.
Waiguru ordered all bars and clubs operating in the county to shut down and reapply for licenses afresh.
She was speaking during the burial ceremony of the 17 individuals who passed away after drinking illicit brew.
“I have today ordered the closure of all bars in Kirinyaga to pave the way for fresh vetting, those bars that will be found to have been operating without license or had previous cases of selling unauthorised products will not be allowed to open again,” she told the congregation.
“We have put in place tighter liquor outlets registration and inspection mechanisms that require the support of the law enforcement agencies to implement. This has been the missing link.”
