Detectives at Kayole Police Station in Nairobi have begun piecing together details into the mysterious death of Charles Ndung’u Njuguna, who was allegedly assaulted by a mob and killed following a botched robbery incident.
Even though police insist the deceased was a victim of mob injustice, Njuguna’s family has dismissed the claim and maintains their kin was arrested and beaten to death by police officers.
For the past one month, the family of Njuguna has known no peace. They have been moving up and down in search of Charles, who was reported missing on September 2, 2025.
On Thursday, Citizen TV aired the story of Charles Njuguna as that of a missing person. Hours later, they were notified of a body being preserved at Mama Lucy Mortuary.
On Saturday, Njuguna’s family confirmed their worst fears by positively identifying the body as that of their kin who had been missing.

The family now says Njuguna was arrested by police on the fateful night of September 2 and has been missing since. The family is blaming the police for his death.
“Kutoka siku hiyo simu ilizimika mpaka leo amekuwa mteja. Tumekuwa tukimtafuta tu hivyo mpaka vile tulimuona jana,” said the mother to the deceased, Veronica Wanjiku.
However, police revealed Njuguna was a victim of mob injustice. According to police records, an unconscious Njuguna was rescued from an irate mob at an active crime scene within Kayole’s Saika Estate. The suspect had been cornered while attempting to steal a motorbike.
Police say the victim was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital by an unknown person. A motorbike that did not have its registration number was also recovered at the scene.
It is alleged that the driver of the motorbike escaped from the scene, leaving Njuguna under the wrath of an angry mob.
Witnesses who were present on the fateful night declined to comment on the matter.
“This person was seriously assaulted by wananchi when he tried to steal a motorbike within Saika stage, and that is the information we have,” explained Njiru Police Commander John Owuoth.
Police insist they are pursuing leads into what happened, even as Njuguna’s family senses foul play.
The deceased’s body is being preserved at Mama Lucy awaiting an autopsy and further statement recording from family members and other persons of interest.
