Sifuna declines to second motion to have a select committee investigate DP Gachagua impeachment

Senator Edwin Sifuna declines to second Aaron Cheruiyot’s motion to select a committee to investigate DP Gachagua impeachment
Senator Edwin Sifuna declines to second Aaron Cheruiyot’s motion to select a committee to investigate DP Gachagua impeachment.
Sifuna was called upon during a Senate sitting to second the motion by Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot.
The Majority leader called for the establishment of an 11-member select committee to investigate the removal of the deputy president.
“Much that this is happening, it is the first time. There is a proposal before us as per our standing orders to either consider this matter by a special committee or the plenary. “
“The proposal is that we select 11 of our most trusted members from both sides of the house to consider this impeachment and advise us. They can make a decision on the 11 charges and determine if there are any actionable accusations,” said Cheruiyot.

However, Sifuna stated that the case was unique therefore necessitating a plenary session.
Consequently, Gachagua will now have to face the full Senate plenary.
“This is a matter that is very unique that has elicited public attention. Therefore, given the mood of the house especially on the minority side, I respectfully decline to second that motion,” he stated.
Speaker Amason Kingi has directed the plenary shall investigate the charges on Wednesday and Thursday next week.
The National Assembly and Gachagua have until the end of Monday to submit their evidence.
