Sifuna dismisses claims of ODM–UDA by-elections pact

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has dismissed the existence of the pre-election collaboration between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and his Orange party to present a united front in the upcoming November 27 by-elections.

Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Secretary General reiterated the call that the party retain its identity, clarifying that the broad-based arrangement is not a party nor does it have candidates.

“The pact we made with UDA did not constitute a coalition agreement.  I hear people going around saying there are broad-based candidates in by-epections. Broad-based is not a party, and therefore it has no candidates.  Or else tell me what the broad-based symbol is? ” He said.

According to the senator, ODM will enter the polls as a single entity with its symbol and candidates.

He further accused unknown individuals of attempts to bring confusion to the party through the broad-based talks ahead of the decisive polls, where the party has fielded several candidates.

“We have people who only look at parties’ symbols while voting. When such a person asks for a broad-based candidate, how will you handle that? We don’t want confusion in the upcoming polls unless people want our candidates to fail,” he added.

His remarks come after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki affirmed the collaborative pact by endorsing ODM’s candidate in the Kasipul race, Boyd Were, on Friday, October 31, 2025.

Kindiki, while speaking in Kasipul, reiterated that ODM and UDA would jointly support each other in the November mini-polls.

The DP stated that his endorsement was in the spirit of the broad-based arrangement signed by President William Ruto and the late ODM leader, Raila Odinga.

“We decided that as the UDA, we will support the ODM’s candidate in Kasipul. ODM’s candidate here in Kasipul, who is our candidate too, is this young man, Boyd Were. He is the candidate of the broad-based government. Let no one come here and lie to you that they are in the broad-based,” he stated.

He also affirmed that UDA will support ODM candidates in Ugunja and Magarini as ODM returns the favours in Malava and Banisa Constituencies.
