Sifuna hits back at CS Murkomen over Kitengela rally saga

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has hit back at Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over claims that he was not notified of the Kitengela rally organised by Sifuna and other leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members on Sunday, February 15.

Speaking during a parliamentary proceeding on Thursday, February 19, Sifuna said he has notified Murkomen of their upcoming rally in Kakamega this weekend, dismissing any claims of ignorance similar to those witnessed in Kitengela.

Sifuna said he had notified Murkomen of the rally via WhatsApp and had also circulated it to the Senate WhatsApp group, where Murkomen was still a member as a former senator.

“Since Murkomen remains on the senate WhatsApp group as a former senator, I have shared the notice of the notice for the Kakamega rally both in the group and directly to his personal WhatsApp number, so he cannot later claim he was unaware of the event, as he did with the Kitengela rally,” Sifuna stated.

Sifuna’s response followed Murkomen’s statement on Wednesday, February 18, in which he said the police were not notified of the rally Sifuna’s group held in Kitengela last Sunday.

“The recent rally in Kitengela was very unfortunate in that the report was not given to the police officers so that they could provide security,” the CS said, urging political leaders to give prior notification to authorities before any rally.

In the Kitengela rally, police lobbed teargas at supporters shortly after the event had started, bringing the rally to an abrupt halt.

Murkomen blamed the rally organisers for targeting market day to attract many people and also accused them of ferrying goons from different places to cause chaos at the rally, accusations that Sifuna and the group have denied.

Instead, they also accuse the government and the police of the chaos that claimed the life of one supporter and resulted in several injuries.

Under the Public Order Act, organisers must notify the police of their intention to hold a rally.
